We can change the cognitive story we tell ourselves, but we must also change the bodys' story.   Somatic experiencing is a modality which asks, "Where do you feel your 'story' in your body?".  And we work with what's there, mindfully, using the bodys' language of sensations as our guide.   Many of us have experienced overwhelming situations in our lives.   Sometimes these situations are merely stressful, meaning that over time the after affects go away.  When the the after affects don't go away and there's continues to be residue from the overwhelm in the system, that's when we 'survival energy' stuck in our systems, and that's what makes something 'traumatic'.  Trauma in the body is actually not so much about the 'story', rather it is much more about our physiological imprint and overwhelm the experience leaves in the system.  Overwhelm and trauma is often a fact of life. Most of us, not just soldiers or victims of abuse or attack, have been traumatized. The sources of trauma are wide-ranging; these include natural disasters, exposure to violence, accidents, falls, serious illness, sudden loss of a loved one, surgeries, medical and dental procedures, childhood neglect or abuse, difficult births, and even high levels of stress and toxicity during gestation in the womb. Not all traumatic events will create symptoms; however, trauma related symptoms are rampant in our modern lives. Symptoms of unresolved trauma can include: Panic or anxiety (including panic attacks) Hypervigilance Chronic pain of all kinds Sleep disorders Chronic tension Addictions of all kinds Migraines Gastrointestinal disorders Sexual dysfunctions Dissociation And many others</image:caption>
